Doris' first room was in the building to the right of the tower. Her balcony looked out to the tower and the high mountain San Jacinto. It was so hot (only one air conditioner in town at the soda fountain) Mary suggested dragging their mattresses out onto the balcony. Only a few moments after getting settled in the open air where they could see more stars then they could ever imagine they experienced a first for them both: an earthquake.
